DISCOVER CYCLOCROSS

Girls Rock Race Curious: Discover Cyclocross, Sun. Oct. 21

Dirt, bikes, costume contests, running over obstacles, hand-ups of beer and dollar bills — it's no wonder that cyclocross is the fastest-growing — and most entertaining — cycling discipline in the US. Here in Northern California, there are cyclocross races happening every weekend from now until January 2019. So if the above sounds like fun, get ready for it by joining our next Race Curious event!

What: Cyclocross Skills Clinic

Where: University Terrace Park, 369 Meder Street, Santa Cruz

When: Sunday, October 21, 10am to 1pm

For: Ladies who are completely new to cyclocross (CX), or who have dabbled in it and want to hone their skills

Equipment: Cyclocross bike or hardtail mountain bike is best, but a full-suspension bike can work too. Helmets, gloves, shoes and water are a must, obviously.

Cost: FREE!

Led by local racer Sarah Jordan, this clinic will cover CX skills like dismounting, running over barriers and up hills with a bike, and remounting while running. Even if you know you won't be killing it at the races, CX skills may translate to increased confidence, additional speed and aerobic capacity for the trails.

WAIT! There is more:

Participants will be prepared try out their new-found skills at the Surf City cyclocross race held the very next weekend at the CDF station in Bonny Doon. AND .... Beginner women receive FREE entries in that race.

You have nothing to lose and all sorts of new bike skills to gain this fall. Hope to see you there!

IMG_8950.jpg

Our next ride in Soquel Demonstration Forest is happening Saturday, July 21! We'll be hosted by Trail Head Cyclery who is also putting on a fab lunch spread just for us, so be sure to stick around after the ride. Expect a great raffle giveaway with prizes from our partners CamelbakFox, and of course, the good folk of THC.

Try Something, Buy Something
Need a bike for the ride or just want to try something new? Use the code GirlsRockDemo! to book your demo bike on the THC website and get $50 off the rental fee. Should you decide to buy a bike, Trail Head Cyclery applies your demo dollars towards the bike you choose. You can pick up your bike from their shop on Friday and return it Saturday before 6 pm. And, if you’ve been looking to get more cycling kits, now’s your chance. THC will be setting up a mini boutique just for the ladies of Girls Rock, with lots of women’s apparel going at special prices.

Riding at SDF: What to expect
Long, hot and occasionally steep climbs — Please wear sunscreen, sunglasses, and carry lots of water as well as energy/electrolyte supplements.

Technical Singletrack — We’ll be leading Intermediate and Advanced riders into the singletrack, while Beginner riders will do a double-track out and back. Unfortunately, SDF isn’t a great introduction for New Riders, so we will not host that level this ride. We will resume the New Rider group in September.

Remoteness — SDF has no toilets or water. There are no nearby bike shops. If you run into a technical issue on the trails, you could be a long way from a bail-out point. Please come equipped with basics like a spare tube, tire levers, hand pump and multi-tool.

Schedule
9:00 am – Arrival, fuel, mingling, and guide meeting
9:30 am – Presentations, announcements
9:45 am – Raffle!
10:00 am – Roll out to the trails
12:00 - 2:00pm – Ride ends, taco eating and shopping begin!
NOTE: Please arrange to pick up and return your demo at Trail Head Cyclery. There will be no pick-up/return at the site of the ride.

Location & Parking
We will be riding at Soquel Demonstration Forest, 29400 Highland Way, Los Gatos. Click here for the official map of the area. Parking is on Hihn's Mill Road, just off Highland Way. We will be set up at the upper parking lot.

MBOSC Dig Day presented by Juliana Bicycles

This February, we're setting aside our regular ride for the opportunity to get down and dirty with the Mountain Bikers of Santa Cruz for a Ladies Dig Day, sponsored by Juliana Bicycles. It's the funnest way to give back to the trails, hands down! (Pun fully intended.)

MBOSC strictly limits participants to the first 60 women who sign up. Register now! And if in the end you can't go, please let MBOSC know so they can open up the space to someone else.

Time: 9am to 2pm
Place: Meet at the open field near the Emma McCrary Trailhead
Parking: Extremely limited. Please carpool and/or ride your bike to the location. You'll get extra raffle tickets for doing so!
Equipment: Bring a filled water bottle or hydration bag, bike helmet, gloves, sturdy covered-toe shoes, clothing layers as dictated by the weather
Food: Our host MBOSC and sponsor Juliana Bicycles will bring coffee and breakfast, snacks, lunch and post-ride refreshments. You bring your reusable cup!

But the last time I held a shovel I was five and sitting in a sandbox.
No experience with trail building? No problem. MBOSC has all the tools and expertise needed to get you working the ground.

I can't stay till 2pm. Does that mean I shouldn't come at all?
Join us anyway! If you have to leave early, make sure your crew leader knows.

Is this a rain or shine event?
No. The weather will affect whether or not we can go ahead with the event. Check your email the morning of the event to see if there have been any updates.

Click here to find out more or sign up to be part of the MBOSC–Juliana Bicycles Ladies Dig Day!

Ladies Dig Day is an event by the Mountain Bikers of Santa Cruz (MBOSC). By signing up and completing MBOSC's waiver, you accept the risks—and the rewards—associated with working on trails. Learn more about Dig Days here.

24232125_2160500630642268_5183058068760350550_n.jpg

Dirt, bikes, running over obstacles and hand-ups of beer and dollar bills — it's no wonder that cyclocross is the fastest growing cycling discipline in the US. Here in Northern California, there are cyclocross races happening every weekend from now till January 2018 so if the above sounds like fun, get ready for it by joining our next Race Curious event!

What: Cyclocross Skills Clinic
Where: University Terrace Park, 369 Meder Street, Santa Cruz
When: Saturday,  December 16, 10am to 1pm
For: Ladies who are completely new to cyclocross, or who have dabbled in it and want to hone their skills
Equipment: Cyclocross bike or hardtail mountain bike would be best, but a full-suspension bike would work too. Helmets, gloves, shoes and water are a must, obviously.
Cost: FREE!

Led by local racer Sarah Jordan, this clinic will cover skills like dismounting, running over barriers and up hills with a bike, and remounting while running. Participants will be prepared to try out their new-found skills at the Surf City cyclocross race held the following day, Sunday, December 17, at the CDF station in Bonny Doon.

CANCELLED: Girls Rock > Specialized / Henry Coe Riders

November 2nd Update:

CANCELLED DUE TO WEATHER:
Girls Rock & Specialized at Henry Coe, Saturday 4th Nov

All of us at Girls Rock and Specialized are really gutted to have to cancel the ride we had planned for this Saturday at Henry Coe.

We thank you all so much for your enthusiasm and support but with rain forecasted for Friday night and Saturday morning, we fear that 120 girls and their bikes would be too much for the delicate trails of Henry Coe. We're already in discussion with the good folk of Specialized on when we could reschedule this, and will let you know in due course.

Should the weather make a turn for the better, some of us at Girls Rock will be heading to Henry Coe for a totally casual, unofficial, intermediate-level ride. If you think you'd like to come hang out on bikes with us, keep tabs on our Facebook page. We'll let you know there if it's happening!

d944bfdf-22cc-4269-86ca-eaf528869961.jpg

We're super excited about this next ride! Not only are we venturing out to Henry Coe State Park, but we've got Specialized Bicycle Components hosting us and boy, are they rolling out the red carpet! They're making every stage of our ride extra special (see what we did there?) so instead of our usual introduction, we'll get right into the schedule with details on what you can look forward to.

8:30am – 9:15am: Yoga
Hosted by Specialized, this pre-ride yoga practice is sure to get you warmed up and ready to hit the trails. Please arrive a little before 8:30am to join the class, and bring your own yoga mat.

9:00am – 10:00am: Registration, DEMO BIKE pick-up, breakfast and mingling
YES! We will have women-specific demo bikes from Specialized available for this ride. Booking information will be provided with our next invitation, so look out for that one. Don't need a bike? Come early anyway to pick up your raffle ticket, enjoy a coffee, breakfast pastry and girl talk.

10:00am – 1:00pm: All levels head out to the trails
Specialized is sending each of our groups out with a mechanic for technical support, seeing as Henry Coe is quite remote. Isn't that amazing?

1:00pm – 2:00pm: Taco lunch and Raffle!
All groups should plan to be back by 1pm for a delicious taco lunch sponsored by Specialized. Don't get too lost in the carnitas because at 1:30pm, we'll hold our raffle with loads of prizes from Specialized as well as our partners Bell HelmetsCamelbak and Fox.

Location & Parking
We will be meeting at the Henry Coe State Park, at the Hunting Hollow Entrance. There is ample parking available. It usually costs $6 per car, but Specialized will be covering all our parking costs so just roll on up!

NEXT RIDE: Saturday September 23, Trail Head Cyclery

group.jpg

This September we’re venturing beyond our backyard and heading up to Soquel Demonstration Forest for a good time on bikes with Trail Head Cyclery. Make plans to stick around after the ride because they’re also putting up a fab lunch spread just for us! Expect a great raffle giveaway with prizes from our partners Bell Helmets, CamelbakFox, Redfrog Atheletic and of course, the good folk of THC.

Try Something, Buy Something
Need a bike for the ride or just want to try something new? Starting September 1, use the code GirlsRock17 to book your demo bike on the THC website and get $50 off the rental fee, plus two days for the price of one! Pick up your bike 10am-7pm Friday and sneak a ride in; then ride with us Saturday and return your demo bike before close at 6pm.

We will resume the New Rider group in October.

Fun Tip – Pack a cooler with a your favorite beverages and stay for the post-ride lunch hosted by Trail Head Cyclery!
